Oh, Good Lord!
I would point out that we would have no problem with "identity theft" if governments and corporations (banks in particular) did not insist on knowing details about us which are none of their effing business. In looking for work recently, I've noticed that the first question on the online job application is "What is your SSAN?" 'Scuse me? That's not for identification, and I'll tell to the employer if and only if I have been hired. I have not been hired.
