...until all the speculation ends, or, in the case of the Electoral Tie, it just begins.
My busy, fertile, clapped-out mind has come up with some interesting scenarios, though, so I present one of them here.
Scenario: Dick Morris turns out correct, and Mittens wins big, big enough so that even the disgruntled gimme-gimme people stay home and don't riot. Perfect ending, right?
Nazzofast, Guido. But WAIT! There's MORE!
Obama has been on an Executive Order blitz, promulgating 140 EOs (some say hundreds more, I guess it depends on how you count them and their provisions), more than all the Presidents before him, and many of THOSE had hostile Congresses, too. This scenario says Obama doesn't stop the EO blitz after his thrashing at the polls, he revs it up.
Other gunnies have suggested Obama might impose gun control via EO, and I have even said that I think he would do that by first banning the importation of military-caliber offshore ammo, which he has the power to do.
I'm looking at something far worse, now.
Suppose that Gun Control Executive Order bans all private sales of firearms, requires all sales to go through FFLs, and imposes a go-slow process of some kind on the FFLs?
Could he do it? Sure the NRA would sue his ass off, but it's unlikely that EO would be lifted until Mittens took office, and it might not be lifted right then. Lawsuits take time to get into court, especially if one side wants to slow them down.
- The new reg would likely be ignored sub-rosa, but it would mean the temporary end of private sales via advertising, and even FFL-blessed sales would slow to a crawl.
- Could an injunction be obtained to reverse the EO? I dunno, not a lawyer, but if such injunctions were available, it's certain they would have been used to blunt some of the many noxious EOs that the Won has already published.
Okay then, that looks bleak enough, but let's put the REAL "Freddy Kruger" into it: Suppose the Won wins the election, and still publishes that EO? Now there is NO hope for recission on 012013 at High Noon, EST, because it will be Obama falsely swearing to uphold, etc instead of Mittens actually meaning to uphold. The EO stays in place until those lawsuits wind their way through the courts, or a veto-proof majority of BOTH houses of Congress rams a bill down the Won's throat to kill the EO (not wagering on THAT, "Blue Dogs" or not). In other words, we'd be stuck with it, maybe forever, because it dovetails right into the United Nations Treaty on Small Arms, which requires this, and others have suggested that the (D)onk Senate might send that treaty to the Won to be signed, regardless if he wins or loses, in the "lame-duck session" after the election.
Now, take that Nightmare on Pennsylvania Avenue scenario, and multiply it by your favorite topic of dictatorial control by Barack Hussein Obama. Now you know what drove me to drink to write this post a few days ago.
Some day, you'll thank me for driving you to the bottle so early in the ayem. Well, the distillers will, anyway.
TODAY, you may thank me for sending you out to finish buying your gun collection and ammo supply while you KNOW you still can do that. You have Fourteen Days.
I don't think even Barack Oama would ruin his reputation, or the Dem party's reputation like that. I could be wrong, but cooler heads would talk with him.
Editor's note: PR, I think Obama has a desperate need to be heralded as an effective, modern Socialist leader. To do that, he has to fit the USA into the Socialist mold. US gun ownership, carry, etc does not fit that mold, might even be used to smash that mold. Guns stand between him and his place in history, if I'm right.
