Now we get military-level intelligence on this supposed outfit.
You HAVE to ask yourself why.
The easy answer: there's an agenda at work.
On both sides.
It's entirely possible that this "Unit 450" was made up in a back room at the White House, and it doesn't exist. Obama wants to keep pounding the war-drums, so his peeps might have made this outfit up.
Normally, military units aren't called "Unit 450". A Chemical Weapons outfit would likely be a branch of Divisional Artillery, or maybe it would be a Strategic Operations outfit, or something like that. If, as the article says, it is composed entirely of the Alawite Sect, it might even be akin to a Palace Guard unit.
It is unlikely that "Unit 450" is it's real name, if the unit exists.
Assad may have made up "Unit 450" out of whole cloth.
Put yourself in Assad's shoes: you know that the USA would like to target the chemical weapons, and you don't want them destroyed. Your Intel boys leak the existance of a sooper-secrit, hyper-loyal outfit, and you even give it some some special equipment to drive around, knowing that US sky-spies will spot those vehicles. The whole thing takes on a life of it's own.
This is not new strategy. If you watched the excellent WW2 docu-drama "Patton", you know that the Supreme Allied Command built just such a unit around General Patton, complete with some real and some dummy equipment and plenty of real radio "chatter". The Germans bought this ruse completely, and put most of their anti-invasion forces at the Pas de Calais, instead of down-Channel in Normandy, where the D-Day landings actually took place.
Back to the actual business of chem weapons. They DO require expert handling and preparation before firing. It MIGHT be possible to build chemical weapons that could be handled by ordinary soldiers, but it's unlikely that Syria would have any. They would have older, Soviet-style rocket warheads, artillery shells and aerial bombs. These weapons might or might not have Russian advisers to go along with them.
Bottom line: there is way too much drama and mystery here. Unless a ruse is being run, by one or possibly both sides, "Unit 450" is a political fabrication, by one or both sides.
Look to see who is watching when the mystery unit gets mentioned. That will tell you all you need to know.
