My pothead Congressman

Yep, you read it correctly: MY pothead Congressman. U.S. Rep Earl Blumenauer, (D) East Portland, just came all out (or was that all in?) for Federal MJ legalization. He gets Maroon of the Month for that.

Before all you Libertarians jump all over me, I'm coming around to the idea of legalizing weed by states, but not by the dot.gov. Simple, really. The government can't afford to be in the business of encouraging stoners, simply because unlike fine whisky drinkers like me, they are a motley lot.

Seriously, let's get real. NO Government has any business legalizing ANY sort of intoxicant until and unless it can detect and control intoxicated behavior where such behavior is legally and practically inappropriate. The Government can do that, more or less, with alcohol, but has NOT learned how to do it with weed. Hell, the Government can't even control intoxication by prescription drugs, which it DOES control at the front end, but does NOT control at the user end.

Now comes pot and it's millions of users.

Society is getting further and further behind the power curve on protecting itself from people doing complex, dangerous tasks while impaired by intoxication.

Earl Blumenauer wants to make it worse.

Oh, well, I'm represented by a pot puffer. It could be worse. I could be represented by an actual socialist.

Poll needed

We need a quick poll. Do any of the Geeks/libertarians that Romney was obviously aiming for yesterday feel better about him after the dee-bate?

Did his strategy work?

Did any of the backbone people* get insulted by his remark, "we can't kill our way out of this" (this meaning the FUBAR war in the 'Stan), and his follow-up remark that he will follow Obama's 2014 cut-and-run schedule for ending the war in 'Stan? Maybe we should poll some of the Friday night crowd at various VFW and American Legion posts this week...

Seems to me that Romney took a big chance, that he would win over more geeks/libertarians than he would lose with backbone people*.

Does this tell you that Romney feels good about playing the games of the spineless? I got that message last night.

There's always the "devil-you-know" theory of voting, and my guess is that some spine-people might just employ that rule in two weeks.

Romney's debate strategy was a loser, in my not-so-humble opinion. Last night was the perfect place for Romney to lift up the country, to show some backbone and help those who are losing their spines find them again. Romney did not do that, in fact, it seems to me that he deliberately appealed to Obama's base, not his own. He will be GWB-lite, if he can muster THAT much fortitude, and if he wins. I'm not putting any money on either of those two "ifs" happening.

I'm going to vote for the man, but I can tell you right now that afterward, I will feel like handing a rope and a whip to a Real American, having myself tied to a fence rail, and having the stupid beaten out of me.

* backbone people: my term for folks who put up the Flag more than once or twice a year. Folks who feel that the Second Amendment to the US Constitution is perhaps the most important in the Bill of Rights, because it secures all the others and makes them the law of the Land. Folks that the Won once refered to as the "bitter clingers".

Some believe in omens, for me, I'm not so sure.

Today, I had a longish nap, and awoke at 1530 to take a shower. After the long, hot shower I got out and dried off, then happened to glance out to the East from Schloss Rivrdog, a second-story window, and saw this:
