I heard an NPR interview with Dennis Ross, the ME negotiator under Clinton 42, on the subject of Arafat. I can not remember any exact quotes, but Ross said something to the effect that Arafat would never have negotiated any final treaty to set a border between Israel and Palestine, i.e. leaving Israel intact, because he was not willing to go down in Arab history as the one who had ceded Arab land to the Jews.

It makes me wonder if there is any Arab leader willing to go down in history as the one who cedes anything to the Jews.
