The zeitgeist of Bug Out is being organized, so all you have to do when Bug Out arrives is grab your organized stuff, cram it into your Bug Out Vehicle (I won't cram it, because there's plenty of room in an M35A2), and get thee hence to your sooper-secrit Bug Out Location.
First, there is the essential Bug Out Bag, in which you put all the drek you'll need to get there and defend yourself getting there and after you get there.
Let's assume that you are going to be better defended than just your carry pistol, and in fact, you have, (wisely), Bugged Out with several weapons, those being a shotgun, several handguns and at least one Carbine or Battle Rifle. At this point, ammo supply becomes an issue. Since there's not likely to be a friendly, takes-all-credit-cards ammo dealer Out There, you'd better take all the ammo with you that you'll need to protect yourself, and maybe to trade with...
Yes, TRADE WITH. Ammo is cheap and available now, but after the S.H.T.F., it will be scarce to unavailable, and worth it's weight in....AMMO! Yep, Beans and Bullets will be the New Dollars after S.H.T.F., bet on it.
How do you organize and carry your ammo?
Some will tout the venerable USGI Ammo Box, purpose-built for the job. If you have a source of nice, tight ones, great. Unless that lid seal in those steel ammo boxes is perfect, fuggeddabboudditt. They won't hack the rain, and yes, they DO, in fact, condense water inside.
Enter modern plastics. Enter the Plano Company, maker of the most useful boxes made out of modern plastics. enter the Plano Field Box, a purpose-built, waterproof ammo carrier. At $20+, these boxes have a cost factor, since they are 2-3 times as much as 50-cal ammo boxes in quantity. If you buy a quantity of 50-cal boxes, you MIGHT get 25% of them with good seals, you might not. Cost factor of the Plano boxes is now equalized.
This week, Bi-Mart Corporation in the PacNorWest has the Plano box for $12.97. I think that this might be a closeout, so buy them up while you can. cost factor now clearly in favor of the Plano Boxes.
