It's actually worse than that. Both Polar Sea and Polar Star are currently not at sea; the Sea has been decommisioned and the Star is undergoing an expensive refit to make it seaworthy again by 2013. The only big icebreaker that the Coast Guard operates right now is Healy. At least she's only 11 years old.


Gee, all o' that oil in AK an' nobody got around to building a refinery up there. Tell me again, folks, why it's cheaper to send oil south to be refined and ship the fuels back there. If they cracked the stuff up there, any excess could be brought south in the same pipelines or ships that move crude now.
Nah, beyond my powers of comprehension, I'm sure.
Can anybody enlighten me?
