Scientists are homing in on reasons for the increase in obesity, and the main one is use of antibiotics, which wipe out the delicate balance of bacteria living in our digestive tract. One of these is Helicobacter, which sometimes causes ulcers/cancer of the stomach, but also apparently is an appetite regulator. And there are many others that no longer exist in our inner ecosystem to provide a healthier weight level.
