What do sand hill cranes have to do with anything but being rather cool fish-eating birds?

I met a sandhill crane once, face to face (literally; it was as tall as I was). He, I, a Great Blue Heron and some humans were standing around a guy doing some surf casting on the beach here. The fisherman took the lid off his bait bucket, and before you could say Jack Robinson, the crane had dived into the bucket and scarfed down a mullet, seeming very pleased with himself. I swear, had his beak been flexible, he would have been grinning. The bird was standing about two feet away from me when this happened.
