That's Petey the Pop-up Camper. Got him about seven and a half years ago, but for the past 4 years, he had not been camping, only stored, so today I sold him to a retired fellow who will put him to good use. Sayanara, Petey!

It won't be Obama's war

...when the Congress signs on to it with the open-ended Authorization for Use of Military Force.

It will be the USA's war, in Syria, and probably Iran. Russia will be involved too, maybe shooting, maybe not. They can REALLY put the screws to Europe by cutting off most of their natural gas, all in the face of what is predicted to be a very cold Winter. 

I still won't support this war.

Weather Report from Boomershoot

"The site got more rain last night than I expected but the forecast is looking pretty good. It will be wet and messy out there for a few hours and perhaps all day today. The winds will be up to 15 MPH today too. That will help dry out the ground but it will be cold with the temperature never getting about 43F." Joe

No one's getting a sun-burn THIS year.

NOAA/NWS forecast for Orofino for tonight:

Tonight: A chance of rain showers. Snow level 2400 feet lowering to 1100 feet. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. North northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming south. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

With a low of 36 in town, it will definitely freeze up on the hill...you tent guys will need your best Winter sleeping bags.

Then tomorrow:

Friday: A chance of rain and snow showers before 11am, then a chance of rain showers. Snow level rising to 3000 feet. Cloudy, with a high near 53. West wind between 5 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

That 3K-MSL snow level is right about at range elevation. Normal adiabatic lapse rate for temperature says subtract 5 degrees for every thousand feet of elevation you rise, and the forecast is based on 1,000 feet, so....(the Comptometer runneth) high temps tomorrow will be in the low 40's, just as Joe said.

Saturday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Light and variable wind.

There's your best practice day, right there. Light and variable wind. Perfect.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65.

Perfect Boomershoot weather! No wind forecast listed, but the warm-air regime usually has light winds with it.

SUMMARY: You're gonna freeze your noogies off today and tomorrow, but things get better each day through Sunday. Don't burn up too much ammo on Field Fire Friday, you'll get much better firing conditions on Saturday. Wet ground will be an issue, so extra socks/boots are a MUST. Don't be the last guy to leave on Sunday, because if you get stuck in the mud, you're on your own to get pulled out (recent history here).

Ringing steel at 900 yds with a K98

Rifle: a military surplus K98 Mauser, built in 1941. Appears to have a drill/tap scope mount, holding a $200 Bushnell 5-15X40 scope. The guy probably has no more than $600 in the entire rifle.

His shooting bench is a pair of crossed braces with a bridging table between, topped with some sort of stuffed pad. Also not much money in there.

The target is a circular steel of about 16-18", making it just under 2 MOA.

His calculated hold-over is TWENTY-NINE FEET!

He rings that steel time after time, with handloaded 8X57, the brass being reformed 30-06 PMC (not match grade, nothing special).

This is just one more piece of evidence that a skilled rifleman with a perfectly ordinary weapon CAN present effective fires at great distances.

Boomershoot 2010 - Blogger/Media Day

OK, Boomershoot fans, I'm giving it to you straight: today was a !@#$&^%$# day. Not clear on that? How about this: I'm wet inside AND out, my boots are leaking, it has stormed up here for 24 hours, and I got the LBT stuck in Camp Swampy just as the demonstration boomers were starting to go off after lunch, so I missed THAT action while I was getting covered with mud. A staff member's Exploder pulled me out, then I loaned my snatch straps to another Boomershooter who got his 4X4 pickup stuck trying to position his large travel trailer on the campground.

The mud is a mess, but suddenly at 3pm, the sky cleared cleared off, and the prospect for tomorrow is good weather, cool, but decent.

I spent $6 at the car wash in Orofino getting Camp Swampy off the LBT, but I'm ready for dinner downtown tonight.
