Dealing with the Lockdowns - Oregon version

There are two ways for the State Government of Oregon to make a Disaster Declaration. One is in the Oregon Constitution, in Article X, Section A. the other is an ordinary State Law, ORS 401.165, Declaring States of Emergency, referring to COUNTIES asking for this help, but they MUST provide details.

 

Have any of my readers seen those County Requests for Declaration? I haven't.

 

The ORS also says the Governor may declare such an Emergency, but it alludes to there being a requirement for details. I haven't seen Kate's details. Of interest to me would be which "models" or guesses she relied upon to declare the ENTIRE state was in mortal danger from Covid-19.

 

Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20, and now we know that the original models and predictions were HIGHLY inaccurate, as they predicted death at the rate of 3% of population when, in fact, the actual death rate has been TWO-TEN-THOUSANDTHS OF ONE PERCENT.

 

Why will NO ONE of SUBSTANCE front up Governor Brown and ask for or DEMAND the answers to these "pesky details"?

 

Basing a major societal change which tosses constitutions out the window on inaccurate data has been done before, says my History Book.

 

For example, Hitler did it on 9/1/1939 when he invaded Poland and started World War Two in Europe, after declaring that Germans living in the section of Poland known as the Sudetenland were in mortal danger from racist Poles trying to kill them. Now the Democratic Party USA has done it right here, when our gullible President went along with inaccurate data (deliberately inaccurate or just sloppily inaccurate is still to be determined), so our Nation's economy lies in ruins after the two-month shut-down which was not required.

 

My take on all this is that it has now happened to the good old USA and can't be UN-DONE, so we need to bend our backs now, get back to work, rebuild our economic structures and above all, DON'T LET THE SAME CREW COCK IT UP AGAIN!

 

America, put on your working clothes, pick up your lunch pails, and head for your work-place. If the Management is too afraid of the government to re-open, first, tell those caviling wimps that you have their backs, and if they still won't open, kick them to the curb, go into the factory floor and start the production lines YOURSELVES!.

 

We are either the victims of the stupidest move by our governance ever, or we are the victims of a cruel political move to kill freedom. In both cases, the solution is GET BACK TO WORK, AMERICA!

Now having digested the article (about a six-minute read), what does it say about Amazon's BUSINESS MODEL?

 

Amazon's business model is based on inflating huge HYPE balloons, primarily to keep the stock inflated, but then translating just enough of the concepts behind the gasbag-ideas to reality to keep the hype rolling.

 

Okay, so far. The auto companies have been known for this type of commerce for years, haven't they? They are still here, and they regularly trot out new models with lots of hype (Land Rover). Some of the new models are spectacular failures (Chevy Volt). Some are giant successes (Ford F-150).

 

So, the article says invest in Amazon shares and you won't lose money. End of story?

 

HELL NO!

 

This morning, the wiff was NOT watching Faux News as I stumbled into the kitchen to fire up my first cuppa joe, she was watching HGTV. I ignored the "Oh, Wow Show" as I call it and poured my cup of Life and started to sip the nectar. Time for ads, and an ad came on for a new medical service called "PillPack". They stole an idea from hospital pharmacies and went public with it. It's a good idea. They take all your prescriptions, pack them in a package of packages, and label each one well as to when the little envelope must be opened and the pills taken. Very useful when memory is fading. I had seen this ad for maybe six months. It now has an icon attached to it:

 

"PillPack.com is an Amazon company."

 

Back to my youth: I was a HUGE fan of Sci-Fi as a teen. In fact, it was the biggest thing in my life (not chicks, until I was about 17). A recurrent sci-fi theme in the Fifties was Oligarchy, or the planet being run by mega-corporations. Part of this was just-plain Communism, but part was intelligent warning. IIRCC, A.E. Van Vogt was big on this theme. Arthur C. Clarke as well.

 

Taking Amazon's plans out even farther than their hype-motor can power them, what do we see?

 

Amazon NOW has captured 49% of Internet commerce dollars. When they get much past 70-80%, they OWN commerce, just like in the sci-fi stories. When you OWN all the commerce, what do you get into next?

 

GOVERNMENT. You BUY Government! When you own Government, what do you do? You FORCE the folks to buy your products, that's what you do. We are just about there, my friends.

 

Still don't believe me? Ask China's President Xi Jin Ping about HIS "social credit" system. It fits Amazon.com to a "T".

Portland Transit Attack

During rush hour on Friday, on a busy Max train platform, a whacko who considers himself Christian (he isn't, follows ZERO Christian principles), targeted two women, one wearing a Hijab (Islamic clothing article) and began to rant at them. Two transit customers immediately gave a heated verbal response while others watched. The crazy pulled a knife and started slashing. Before it was over, the two loudest Social Justice Warriors lay dead, throats cut, and another bystander, her role not clear, was wounded as well (she will survive). The perp ran off, but was quickly apprehended by the police.

Now the fallout begins. Today, another Social Justice Warrior who also happens to be a newspaper Editor, Samantha Swindler, writes an editorial WHICH IS PUBLISHED ON PAGE TWO AS NEWS!!! If you get the Oregonian, you will note that she is NOT identified as an Editor, and in fact, her editorial is in the news section. That's a HUGE mistake, but it shows what the mass media is all about these days: claiming to inform us while actually propagandizing us.

Ms. Swindler leads her article:

A white Christian extremist is accused of murdering two men who stood up to defend a pair of teenage girls being harassed for their religion on a MAX train.

This is where unchecked hate can lead.

She ends it:

No one can turn away. The brave must stand up.

We cannot let fear silence us.

The Editor said NOTHING about the obvious bad choice of the slasher's victims to face a crazy man down. When the facts of this event are stacked up, the SJWs' bad choices are what led directly to their wounds. It has "bad optics" to say this, but the fact that these 2 people loudly opposed the perp's crazy, and also FREE speech got them killed.

The newspaper won't have the guts to put that out there, so I will.

Folks, it's sometimes called the "New York System", but when in the public, ESPECIALLY when riding transit with it's confined spaces and crowds limiting your freedom of defensive movement, you simply DO NOT GET VERBAL, no matter the provocation. Once that man pulled his knife, someone HAD to get cut unless a better actual (not social justice) Warrior was there to do proper battle with him. Even a gun-bearer would have had a hard time in that crowd. There would have been a large chance of a bullet striking an innocent. The bottom line there is that once the crazy felt challenged enough to get his knife out, de-escalation had no chance.

As for Editor Swindler, YOUR bad choices in your article may just get more people killed. The Publisher should have known better than to let you pull this stunt.

"Sanctuary City" leaders cook their own goose

The self-styled "Sanctuary City" mayors and fellow-traveling sycophants had a summit meeting today. They are light on historical perspective. Such a meeting of Mafiosi took place in the '60s, and as a result, many Mafia types were indicted.

 

Comes now a similar meeting of immigration lawbreakers, and with luck and hard work by Jeff Sessions, the same result will befall them that befell the Mafiosi.

Surveillance State the answer?

It would seem that the Surveillance (nice French word, that!) State is NOT the answer. There were 1,200 surveillance cameras in and around Nice, France. Good cameras. No one watching those cameras, apparently, because backtracking the attack vehicle shows the perp loading it with guns, etc out away from the City center. Think about it. An attentive guard can monitor MAYBE six screens showing activity at once. That would mean that the Gendarmerie needed 200 cops watching monitors on a busy night. I don't know how many they actually had, but if it was more than a dozen, I'd be surprised.

The answer here would have been to have zero road traffic permitted on the waterfront. Maybe they did, I haven't heard, but if that WAS the case, they were unprepared for a vehicle ramming the barriers.

Another answer, of course, would be to have an armed populace. If that had been a crowd on the US Gulf Coast, for example, it's likely that the vehicle would have been fired upon by many, many concealed carriers, markedly shortening the death-rampage. On Coney Island, NY? Not so much resistance. Gun-free zone.

Curious that there were apparently far more weapons on the truck than the lone perp could use. First thing that come to MY investigatory mind is: Where was the rest of the crew of Jihadis? Chickened out? Dog crossed their path and they had to go bathe and change clothes?

Curious, because I just heard Chris Christie the candidate for POTUS claim during a Fox News interview that our current situation in the Syria mess wouldn't have happened with His Tubbiness at the helm, because he would have set up a "no-fly zone". It sounded like Tubby the One-Note Tuba thinks we could use that "solution" now.

Whotta maroon!

Look, I'm no General Patton, but I did have years of military leadership training, and I seem to remember that the thing about employing forces in battle is that the nation employing them MUST consider just how those forces could be supported BEFORE committing them to battle.

The current Air Order of Battle over Syria would involve Russian, Chinese, (maybe Israeli*) frontline fighters, all versus our forces. We have just pulled our last Carrier Task Force out of the Persian Gulf, so whatever forces we could employ on short battlefield notice have to come from Turkish bases, where we have a few aging F-16 fighters on a VERY tenuous basing agreement with NO permission to use them to fight Russians over Syria. Realisticly, if push comes to shove, we would need several re-inforced Wings of fighters and three Carrier Air Groups available to fight the current forces arrayed against the US interests. That's not going to happen, so when the first US fighter fires the first missile at a Russian/Chinese/Israeli fighter, within an hour there won't be a single US aircraft left in the region.

The Russians have maybe only a squadron or two of fighter-bombers in Syria, and the Chinese maybe just a few aircraft, but the Russ are BASED there, on the coast, and have small carriers available for naval attack variants. We are (tenuously) based in Turkey, and the unstable Ergodan government could order us out at any point with little notice. We have already sent all our US forces' dependent families home, so we KNOW our basing agreement in Turkey is tenuous.

Sorry, Governor, if you are going to sound Presidential, blow that One Note** on your tuba, this speech did little to advance your cause.

* Two days ago, the Russians sent a member of their General Staff to Israel to discuss the Russian's request to have the Israeli Defense Force involved in the current military situation vs. ISIS. The Russians announced that they wanted to use IDF intelligence, which they value highly as to it's quality, and would not object to Israeli aircraft flying reconnaissance missions over Syria, either. The two militaries discussed how to keep in constant communication, possibly even to the point of establishing credentials on each others' digital battle networks. Israel, in turn, asked for, and presumably will get, Russian help to stop Syrian groups from shipping war materials to Hezbollah. That means that The Russians will mount air attacks when the IDF spots convoys of such materials moving overland towards Lebanon, or permit the IDF to do so.

** Christie's One Note: "but-but-but, I killed the UNIONS in New Jersey" (he didn't, but he still claims he did).

The Umpqua Community College Massacre, a letter to Oregon students

Last Thursday, 1 October, an evil person went to a peaceful place and made it into an evil place by his action. By his action alone.

At Umpqua Community College, as at all Oregon institutes of higher learning, the educators tried to ban the possession of firearms outright, but Oregon's permitted-carry law says that lesser jurisdictions than the State may NOT pre-empt the law, which allows permitted carry in all public places except courthouses, and libraries if the library boards want to ban firearms. The institutions of higher education have developed a work-around. They deny the Second Amendment and the Oregon Concealed Carry licensing law as follows:

All the Oregon colleges and Universities have adopted an in-your-face gun ban. The gun ban works like this: the institution admits that they have no power to ban the firearms de jure, but instead, they de facto ban them by saying that all institution participants may not: earn grades/credits for classes, be considered for rehiring if already hired or sell anything to the institution (bans vendors carrying). The institutions claim to be exercising their lawful administrative authority by doing this. This rule has been in effect for several years since a Western Oregon State University student successfully sued that institution for preventing his lawful permitted carry.

For some reason, none of 2A-protecting orgs in Oregon have seen fit to challenge this obvious "if it walks like a duck" rule, or if they have, I haven't heard about their work.

Comes then the massacre. I am waiting, with bated breath, for the first lawsuit filed for the tort of failing the "in loco parentis" duty that all schools have. That duty, an absolute legal mandate, says that when schools have custody of minor children (some of UCC's students are not of legal age), they have a duty to act in the place of the parents. Such duty extends to protecting the children from obvious evils such as murder and grievous wounding by gunfire. A lesser duty extends in favor of the adult clients of such institutions.

When that lawsuit is filed, the UCC's answer will be to say that they had the administrative ban on firearms in place to "protect" the students. Of course, that won't fly as a defense, nor should it.

Umpqua Community College could have fulfilled their in loco parentis duty simply by allowing permitted concealed carry, or they could have fulfilled it by having an adequate (but expensive) campus security system. The UCC did neither, so now they have been exposed to huge financial liability, and should be. As a result of the obvious lawsuit, the de facto firearms ban will have to go away.

What a shame that nine good people had to lose their lives and a goodly number more will survive their wounds, but be scarred mentally forever by their brush with evil, just so the wisdom of the Founders could be demonstrated yet again. Self-defense is a Natural Right, and while the Second Amendment to our Constitution encodes it firmly into our law, it doesn't have to be so encoded. I urge all Oregon college students to consider total rebellion against the "administrative" gun ban.

Protect yourself, students, no one else will, or even can.

Immigration Policy and the Roseburg massacre

It seems that the shooter in yesterday's campus massacre in Roseburg, OR is a disaffected Brit yob, one who had great admiration for the IRA, and, presumably, their ultra-violence.

When my grandfather immigrated to the USA in the 1880's, he would have been closely questioned at his port of entry, Houston, about why he wanted to come here. Does our immigration policy even allow such an inquiry these days?

BTW, considering that the IRA was/is a terrorist outfit, let's chalk this one up to domestic terrorism, even if Sinn Fein doesn't make that claim. I have a right to protect myself against domestic terrorism, and I will. The world is on notice that I have assumed this protective attitude.
